At work recently we've been having to do these IPA sessions, which means that we have to present something that we can talk about that's relevant to what we do.
I presented a talk by Stefan Sagmeister, about happiness and doing design which makes you happy etc... There's a series on TED if you wanna watch them, I find him quite an inspiration. However I'm not sure if I took the others opinions in the wrong way but most people seemed quite cynical - said he seemed a depressing character himself and that his work didn't really translate happiness. I can sort of see where they're coming from but I admire the work he does and his take on things and appreciate his ideas and philosophies. One of the comments was that he was talking about his personal work and that that isn't always an example of what his practice is like. However I have a view that you need to practice what you preach and to me it doesn't seem with those key themes running through his work that he isn't doing so in his career.
Paola today also did a talk, presenting a designer called Frank Chimero from New York. Which sort of went down in the same manner. He spoke about design being a gift, spending time on it creates a thing of value and what we do is important because we're creating things for people, that could go on to more people if they like it. The talk is here.
And again, the comment about it being a personal opinion and maybe not exactly what he does himself as a designer came through. As if these designers are dreamers in a way, romanticising the idea of doing things you love and you like. They are in a fashion, though I don't think these designers would be in the places they are now if they didn't have that sort of work ethic guiding them through, it's not always possible but choosing and pursuing projects that you care about, to make the most of the passion that is the fire for the creative stuff you come up with. If you're making work about stuff you don't care about you are a liar in a way, and you wont get the same level out that you would if you gave a hoot about it. I dunno if this makes sense. But I disagree with the idea that these people aren't practicing what they preach in these talks through their careers, I think they very much are and that's why they are where they are. And it's an inspiration.

So I just got a film developed, been so excited to get this back as it's been previously exposed to colours and shows up differently depending on how it was processed... And goes all these rainbow colours that you can see here... I love it. It's called Revolog Kolor film and the people who produce it are super nice. Go buy some! It's well worth it!

It was Mikee's birthday over the weekend! We had balloons, saw an exhibition on death, wrote on a chalkboard about what we wanna do before we die, I made cake, we went to the Ritz with our mums for afternoon tea and we topped it off with a rock bar with some amazing friends. Was a great time.
